Identity Activists as Actors of the Emergence of Radical Ideas
Pouvoirs n°181 - avril 2022 - Racismes et antiracismes - p.47-60
For some, identity activists are “influencers” on behalf of the far-right
and the right—a claim that the activists themselves accept. But is it really the case? Do identity activists promote their ideas and, if so, how do they do it? From the op-eds of identity activists in the early 2010s to the debate between Zemmour and Mélenchon in 2021, the analysis of the expression “remigration” highlights the mechanisms—be they endogenous, exogenous, or oppositional—which facilitate the diffusion of radical ideas. The diffusion of a particular expression being a processual phenomenon, it can only be understood in view of its successive appropriations: it is only because they find more and more relays that identity ideas emerge in the public sphere.
