How to Think About Modern Wars : Questioning Military Doctrines
Pouvoirs n°125 - L’armée française - avril 2008 - p.81-92
Military doctrines and doctrinal reflections occupy a major place in
the important transformations that the French Armed Forces have
experienced since the 1990s. The goal of the article is to contribute to
the doctrinal debate by raising three questions. First of all, it is necessary
to define military doctrines and to highlight their strategic and
political implications. Then, the main characteristics of the renewal
of doctrinal reflection in France, in particular for the land forces
since 1999, are presented. Finally, the article offers a critical reflection
regarding the very notion of war in society on the one hand and the
relationships between political and military logics on the other.
