Heirs of political elites

During the Vth Republic the changing of local political elites was very extensive. However continuation was mixed with alterations in this development. The main features in recruitment of local leaders are the very same, except for the progressive rise of the new middle-classes. As for the intervening processes with local society, then the true relationship with their own area has scarcely moved. Local politics is nevertheless affected by the growth of political parties, and the decline in republican legitimacy makes relations with citizens more uncertain. Notwithstanding the « revolution tranquille » initiated by local elected officiais is essentially defined by a new logic for action. Local politicians exhibit a strong adaptive capacity to institutional and social change, capacity supported by the expansion of local public policies.
