Pouvoirs n°176 - janvier 2021 - La nouvelle Algérie - p.93-104
From the start, the Hirak movement raised questions about a possible return of the Islamists to power in Algeria. The memories of the bloody decade have been relayed by the parents of the young revolutionaries who initiated the protest. As a consequence, the leaders of the movement were wary of Islamism in politics, yet they accepted the support offered by rigorist activists. Among the actors of the peaceful revolt, Islamist groups intend to emerge thanks to the democratic electoral process which they now support. They base their legitimacy on the massive and far-reaching Islamisation of different strata of Algerian society since the 1990s.
