Habemus Papam: The History of the Pope’s Election

The election of the Pope, announced to the people of Rome and to the whole world with the formula Habemus papam, usually generates an interest that matches its mystery. The process of designation of the bishop of Rome, whose essential procedures were established in the Middle-Age and enriched during the modern and contemporary periods, has from the start represented a major political issue expressed in the notion of libertas Ecclesiae. In fine, this freedom is expressed in rare occasions by the possibility for the pontiff to relinquish his charge.
