Germany : reconstruction of a nation

At the time of their foundation, both German states claimed to embody the German Nation : hence Germany’s division was legitimazed by national unity. When both states recognized one another, they had to revise the myths on which they were based and redefine their relations with the Nation. Germany’s unification puts once more into question the relations between State and Nation. Though based on the same principles which prevailed in 1949, the Fédéral Republic of Germany will necessarily change.
