From Ottomans to British : the end of Empires

By their very nature, empires deny the right to national self-determination, and have thus always provoked reactions from national minorities. But did national minorities bring about the end of modem empires? Careful analysis shows that the First World War and the peace treaties that followed were also instrumental in bringing down the empires that had spread across most ofthe world before 1914. Later, when the key relationship had become that between nationalism and décolonisation, it is clear that décolonisation owed much to the stratégies of the impérial metrop- olises as weU as to the action of local nationalisms.
