From Ancient to Modern India, how has the present political system been built ?
Pouvoirs n°90 - L’Inde - septembre 1999 - p.7-24
India’s present democratic political system has been able to provide the
means to hold its complex society together, but has facilitated only
moderate economic growth. Its political framework was established in
1947 by those who had led the nationalist struggle against colonial rule
but without discarding all of the inherited institutions of government.
Under Nehru the emphasis was on political inclusion under elite
leadership. More recently, the system has evolved under the pressure of
popular politics. Incremental change has gradually opened the way for
new, more populist voices to be heard.
