Pouvoirs n°161 - avril 2017 - La France et ses élites - p.135-146
The construction of Europe has been associated in the public mind with the fantasy of the confiscation of power by financial, political and intellectual elites. This feeling of alienation finds its source in the recent capitalistic unification of the world. On the one hand, the globalization of production and exchanges renders obsolete the neolithic divisions of power between neighbouring sovereign States. On the other hand, triumphant hyper-individualism has ruined the relationships of trust and solidarity which underlie representative democracy. Beyond the tribulations of the European Union, we are in fact confronted with a general crisis of the very notions of common good and political bond.
