Eugenics : from fantasy to debate

The term eugenics refers to projects aimed at improving the genetic patrimony of the human race by controlling or orienting its reproduction. Although the problems raised by biomedicine and genetic engineering invite a reconsideration of eugenics, current discussion of the question is largely confined to denunciation of a bogeyman. The anti-eugenicist position has three bases : a confusion between eugenics and racism, a taboo of religious origin on any interférence with the process of procreation and the ’sanctity of life’, and finally an apocalyptic fear of destroying humanity through the manipulation and modification of our genetic patrimony. A choice is necessary between rational discussion of the question and a demonising condemnation arising from the contemporary anti-scientific and anti-technical ideology.
