Electing a President or honoring the gods ?

In France, the choice ofthe effective head ofthe executive is the unique and explicit finality of the presidential election. Is it the only one ? Is it the most important ? The voice of the people on this occasion is triggered by an initiative taken by the Government which calls the voters to the polls. It operates according to a vocabulary and a set of legal rules which is quite ritualistic. As for any formality, any procedure, this one is neither neutral nor innocuous. Thus, by the sole fact, that it occurs regularly, the presidential election fulfills a symbolic function of the highest importance for the social order.
