Donald Trump and the Shadow of Impeachment

On September 24th, 2019, the Speaker of the House of Representatives announced the beginning of impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump, claiming he had “violated the Constitution” by asking the president of Ukraine to investigate the possible wrongdoings of one of the sons of his Democratic rival, Joe Biden. In theory, its possible success is limited given the Republican majority in the Senate, that has the last word. However, Trump’s more and more unstable behaviour, the regular revelations of scandals involving him and the unpopular announcement of the withdrawal of American troops from the North of Syria could threaten the future of a president who, regardless of the impeachment outcome, will remain one of the few to have been challenged by this infamous procedure.
