Democratic Transition Revisited

After thirty years of parliamentary democracy in Spain, it is possible to
try and draw a balance-sheet of this experience. On the one hand, Spain
experienced one of the longest dictatorships in Western Europe since
the Second World War. On the other hand, it produced a process of
transition that is a subject of debate and refl ection, and that extended its
infl uence beyond its borders. Eventually, this thirty-year period allows
us to draw a balance-sheet of the effi ciency of the Spanish political
system, and of its social dynamic through that of the institutions and
actors involved.
