The crisis in the clergy is deep : decrease in the number of priests, diversification in the ways of excercising their office and in the methods of propagating their faith ; identity and theological crisis. But the emergence of lay groups which provoke new ecclesiastical institutions or rejuvenate old ones and which increase their power by re-appropriating the expression of the faith, raise the problems of the exercice of office in new terms : will tomorrow’s Church be founded on the theology of the People of God or on that of the distinction between clergy and laymen ?
