Between economies and politics : the changing social image of the clandestine immigrant
Pouvoirs n°47 - L’immigration - novembre 1988 - p.75-92
Today’s official condemnation of clandestine immigration commands a general consensus, but it has not always been so : in fact, official discourse has varied substantially over the past forty years. Change in the social and political treatment of « the clandestine immigrant » has had at least as much importance as change in the socio-economic treatment of the workers concerned. It is therefore worth asking whether the present-day consensus is not indicative of ambiguous attitudes on the part of the political parties towards the immigration question. From this perspective, analysis of « the clandestine immigrant » stereotype is a useful tool for reflection on the present and future position of immigrants and their descendants in modem France.
