“America First”: A Foreign Policy without Diplomacy

The foreign policy of the United States today resembles president Trump: it is both unpredictable and dangerous. It is also affected by the far-reaching political evolutions that made his election possible, and by the resurgence of populist, nationalist and protectionist currents of thought. Whatever the result of the 2020 election, it would be a mistake to hope that this period will close up as a painful interlude. It will leave profound and lasting traces, in the United States and around the world.
