Action-Reaction: Terrorism and the State

Terrorism and the State are linked by an unavoidable relationship— from the trauma of the terrorist attack to the security and societal responses it triggers, especially in democracies. A specific sequencing (live media coverage, the chase of the terrorists, their arrest and the resulting consequences) has various effects: the political agenda and
the security operational doctrines can be revised, the Executive often tends to dramatize the situation in order to mobilise the country and, in the end, new tools of public policy may appear such as, for instance, prevention and deradicalization.
