A sociological study of Gaullism’s supporters

A sociological analysis confirms the diversity and the size of Gaullist support as well as its popular traits. But an even more important feature is the numerical domination of the middle-classes. The creation of the RPR has been marked by an increase in upper class support, the dissolution of the working class base and greater adherence from the unpaid sections of society. This sociological breakdown, which served J. Chirac so well in 1981, may become a stumbling block. The sociological profile of its support sheds light moreover on the stability of the structures of Gaullism, partly otherwise explicable by the normal self-regeneratory processes.
