A decree of the Supreme Court brings the end of a legislative veto in the United States

The decision of the Supreme Court in the Chadha case tolls the bell for the Legislative Veto not to be confused with the Presidential Veto. The Legislative Veto, a practice of recent origin, enabled Congress to reserve the right to approve or disapprove measures taken by the President or by agencies, pursuant to a legislative delegation. The Supreme Court held that the practice was violative of the principles of separation of powers, as well as of the principles of bicameralism. It remains to be seen whether that decision will finally run in favor of Congress or of the President.
