A Sociology of Contemporary Gambling

From the authorization of slot machines (1986) to the legalization of certain online games (2010) gambling has experienced a profound evolution. Lotteries, scratch cards, horse betting, poker… French people have never before taken so much interest in games of chance and games for money. Their daily spending on gambling has increased from 47,7 million to 72,16 million Euros over eight years (2002-2010). After presenting the main sociological characteristics of slot machines users, I will show how the actors of the sector (the State, the Française des jeux, the doxa about gambling as a pathology…) have dealt with the current transformation. The latter is not without consequences (excessive gambling, gambling by minors) and is far from being over, despite the recent creation of a number of agencies (regulatory authority, consultative committee, gambling observatory…) whose missions and means still have to be defined.
