A European Model of Parliamentary Democracy?

The accession of ten countries of post-communist Europe to the
European Union should not substantially increase the diversity of
political institutions of the member states of the Union. Indeed, not
only have the future members instituted parliamentary democracies
after the fashion of the current members of the EU, but the political
regimes they have adopted share important common features with the
political systems of Western Europe. The requirements set down by the
EU in view of the accession have contributed to reinforcing this homogeneity,
thereby favoring the emergence of a European model of parliamentary
democracy.
