Taking a “critical look” at the semi-presidential “category” is not very original. However, its very persistence creates a degree of astonishment among constitutionalists, even more so when they add to their critical examination a comparative approach. The article uses a Franco- German perspective to develop a threefold critical examination. First, it looks at the category itself, which has failed to impose itself in order to overcome the binary distinction between parliamentarian and presidential regimes. Then, it considers the broader problematic of constitutional categories. Finally, it focuses on the Fifth Republic, the main object of French studies of semi-presidentialism.
