Soccer Money

Pouvoirs n°101 - Le football - avril 2002 - p.89-104

In the last twenty years, like other sports, soccer has undergone major economic
transformations which have changed the meaning of the circulation of
money in this sport. The rationalizing logic of profitability has replaced the
logic of prestige spending. While this new approach might contribute to a
moralisation of money, it can also feed hubris and, more importantly, it challenges
the basic principles of soccer culture: uncertainty and identification. If
the notion of soccer regulation has any meaning it is to be found not so much
in the prohibition of economic rationalization as in a constant reminder of the
fact that the strength of soccer lies in its ability to represent the values of
contemporary societies and to contribute to their development.
