The following attempt to establish a typology is inevitably imperfect :
the personal equation of the candidates, the state of the contending
political forces and the context of the election represent variables
that disrupt the analysis. Yet, undeniably, the presidential candidates
pursue very different goals : many try to benefit from a movement
of public opinion in the hope of creating an electoral dynamic
(hopefuls / minority candidates), whereas others limit themselves to
testifying in favor of marginal groups (extras / marginal candidates).
Only a small group of candidates (headliners / ambitious candidates)
are really in a position to win the presidential election, or at least to
qualify for the second round.
